The need for good education
Some families in rural India can’t afford a good education for their children.
The Indian government funds free primary education, but sadly in many villages, where there is no-one to hold teachers to account, the standard of teaching is very low.
As the education system makes it impossible for the project to influence the government-funded primary school, our partner project in India has set up its own school, with fees affordable to most villagers, and a much higher standard of teaching and staff attendance.
The aim of the Children's Scholarship Fund
VRI has established a Children’s Scholarship Fund to provide free places and general support, so that no child from the village misses out on a good education.
How the Fund works
Local distribution of the Fund means it is flexible and effective. Staff, as part of the local community, are able to identify the children in need of financial help.
In 2008 the Fund:
- Assisted 72 children at the primary school with their fees.
- Supplemented the salaries of the primary school teachers to bring them up to local levels.
- Financed a very successful staff training session, which helped staff to feel they were part of a team and their opinions were valued
- Provided assistance to Jafar Pur village secondary school, a new school set up recently with help from the APK project
You can view more detailed information on how the Fund has been used in recent years by looking at the Annual Reports.
